“Walk to Rwanda” off to a flying start as our first event raises more than £700

Thanks to all those who’ve generously donated in support of our first “Walk to Rwanda” event, the “Rwanda Meander”, which went ahead yesterday evening, amid beautiful sunny weather, on the day that would have been Charlotte’s 35th birthday. Our walk from Putney to Westminster took just about three-and-a-half hours, and we arrived at the finishing point just as Big Ben was chiming 10pm. Between us we’ve so far managed to raise more than £700, including Gift Aid. Pictures to follow shortly, along with details of our next few activities!

The Walk to Rwanda part I: The “Rwanda Meander” – Putney Bridge to Westminster, 6pm, June 4th 2008

The first leg of CWMF’s epic “Walk to Rwanda” will begin on June 4th 2008, with a leisurely summer stroll along the Thames, covering the six-or-thereabouts miles from Putney Bridge to St. Thomas’s Hospital, by Westminster bridge. The CWMF trustees will be joined by friends and supporters of the Charlotte Wilson Memorial Fund, for this first stage of our most ambitious fundraising effort yet.

The idea behind the “Walk to Rwanda” is a very simple one – through a series of sponsored events over the next few years, we are aiming to walk (or run, or bike, or perhaps even swim) the 4,109 miles from London to Kigali, raising money for CWMF’s education, health and peacebuilding projects in Rwanda and neighbouring Burundi. Every mile walked counts towards our total – so everyone who takes part will be helping us make a difference.

Charlotte’s mother, Margot Wilson says: “June 4th would have been Charlotte’s 35th birthday, so we thought it would be the perfect day to launch this fantastic new fundraising project. Next month’s event will also be a great opportunity for those who knew Charlotte to come together in support of the fund set up to help the causes that she believed in so passionately.”

The walk will start from the south side of Putney Bridge at 6pm on Wednesday June 4th 2008, and all friends and supporters of CWMF will be very welcome to join us. We’ll shortly be posting details of how to support the event online, but in the meantime please do contact us via richardcameronwilson AT yahoo.co.uk if you’d like to take part or find out more.

Only 4,109 miles to go!

A journey of 4,109 miles begins with a single step… And for the Charlotte Wilson Memorial Fund that first step will be taken on June 4th 2008 when we begin our mammoth new fundraising initiative, the Walk to Rwanda. Through a series of fun sponsored events over the next few years, we are aiming to walk the full 4,109 miles from London to Kigali, and in the process raise thousands of pounds to support vital education, health and peacebuilding projects in Rwanda and Burundi.

Further details of how to support us will be posted shortly, but if you’d like to know more in the meantime, please contact richardcameronwilson AT yahoo.co.uk
